It is a special joy to bring new works to life in performance, and none more-so than the music of New York City composer Peter Lurye.
“Heckscher Park” was written for the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington, Long Island. The New Hudson Saxophone Quartet - NHQ - (Paul Cohen on soprano, Zachary Kern - alto, Isabelle Mailman - tenor, Josh Lang - baritone), gave the world premiere of this three movement quartet in Harris Theater at the 2026 Navy Saxophone Symposium.
"Heckscher Park" is a light, evocative work, bringing to mind the many hours the composer spent at the park in his youth. It is not just playful and cheery, but memorable and uplifting, resembling a cross between Samuel Barber and Musical Theater! It is a work that is as sophisticated and nuanced in the writing as it is engaging, joyful and accessible to hear. A welcomed and rare combination these days. I’m hoping saxophonists will agree. The music is available, and the NHQ recording will be released in early summer.
