In this WGN News Chicago report, attorney Pedro Echarte speaks on behalf of the family of Supraja Alaparthi, a 33-year-old mother from Schaumburg, Illinois, who was killed during a parasailing accident in the Florida Keys in 2022.
Federal prosecutors have now indicted boat captain Daniel Gavin Couch on seaman’s manslaughter charges, more than three years after the tragedy. The fatal tourist excursion left Alaparthi dead and her 10-year-old son and 7-year-old nephew injured after investigators say Couch cut the parasail line during dangerous wind conditions, sending them crashing into the Old Seven Mile Bridge.
Echarte criticizes Couch and the company he worked for, saying they have refused to cooperate in the family’s civil wrongful death case and have shown “a complete lack of care” for the victims’ pain.
This story sheds light on parasailing safety failures, accountability for tourist excursion operators, and the legal fight for justice after a vacation injury or wrongful death.
