I believe that there is an inherent and essential characteristic relationship between Balamurali’s music and Tódi rāgam. To me, this relationship is akin to the rays of sun light and the sun himself.
Listening to Tódi continuously reveals its dimensions like the depth and vastness of an ocean and gives us an idea why this rāgam has captivated the souls and imagination of generations of musicians and composers.
Here is an offering to celebrate Vijayadashami with a rendition of Shyama Shastri’s “Émani migula varñintu”. This video is from from a TV broadcast called “Swara Rāga Sudha” from 1987.
One of the unique aspect of this particular video is that the rendition is shot around a temple which enhances afterglow, filling us with a deep devotional mood.
