Probability (Mathematics)

Usually, in math, we deal with things that always happen in the same way and are always certain. Like if we add 1 plus 1 we always get 2. Or if we multiply 5 times 2 we always get an answer of 10. There is no uncertainty at all.

In the real world, many things can’t be predicted with total certainty. For example, if you roll a dice, you are not sure what number will you get or if you toss a coin you can’t predict if you get heads or tails. But we still know a few things about it. Like the dice, we all know that we can only get a number from 1 to 6 if we roll it and if we toss a coin we know that heads are just likely to show up as tails.

All these examples are an example of Probability. Probability is simply how likely an event is to happen.
Like tossing a coin, we know that there are only two sides of the coin which is the heads and tails this means that if we toss it a lot of times we could expect that about half the flips will be head and half the flips will be tails. That means that the probability of coin landing heads is ½ and the probability of coin landing tails is also ½.

Also when we roll a single dice there are six possible outcomes we can get, numbers 1 to 6. So this means that the probability of any one of them is 1/6.
So in general in order to know the probability of an event to happen we just need to divide the number of ways it can happen by the total number of outcomes.
