On the night of 6 Poh History (December 1704), Guru Gobind Singh Ji left Anandpur Sahib History of 6 poh — the sacred city where He spent many years of His life, built great forts, established Sikh sovereignty, and shaped the destiny of the Khalsa Panth.
history of Anandpur Sahib was not just a city. It was the spiritual, political, and military center of Sikh history. It was the birthplace of the Khalsa Panth and the place where Guru Gobind Singh Ji lived with His family and Sikhs while leading the struggle against tyranny. Leaving Anandpur Sahib was not a retreat; it was one of the greatest sacrifices in Sikh history.
This video presents the complete and emotional history of 6 Poh (1704) — the night when Guru Gobind Singh Ji, along with His family and Sikhs, bid a painful farewell to Anandpur Sahib after a long and exhausting siege.
After months of suffering, food shortages, and extreme hardship, the situation inside Anandpur Sahib became unbearable. During this time, the Pahari Hill Rajas and Mughal authorities gave repeated assurances and false oaths, promising safe passage if Guru Gobind Singh Ji agreed to leave the city. Trusting these solemn promises, Guru Sahib took one of the most difficult decisions of His life.
The atmosphere on the night of 6 Poh was filled with sorrow and silence. It was dark, cold, and rainy. Sikhs were physically exhausted and emotionally broken. Many bowed down and touched the soil of Anandpur Sahib one last time, leaving behind their homes, forts, and memories. Guru Gobind Singh Ji remained calm and composed, carrying the pain of His Sikhs as a Guru, a father, and a leader.
Before leaving Anandpur Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh Ji visited sacred places such as Kesgarh Sahib, reaffirming faith and resolve. Important strategic decisions were taken, and the Sikhs were instructed to leave in multiple jathas (groups) to reduce danger during the journey.
Soon after leaving Anandpur Sahib, the betrayal became clear. Despite sworn promises, attacks were launched on the Guru Sahib’s convoy. One of the most heartbreaking moments occurred at the Sarsa River, where floods, darkness, and enemy attacks caused chaos and separation. Guru Gobind Singh Ji was separated from Mata Gujri Ji, and the Sahibzadas were separated from the main group. Many Sikhs attained martyrdom while protecting the Guru.
The night of 6 Poh marked the beginning of the great Shaheedi era in Sikh history. The events that followed — Chamkaur Sahib, Sirhind, and the martyrdoms of the Sahibzadas — all trace their roots back to this night.
This video explains why the history of Anandpur Sahib is eternal and why the sacrifices made during this journey continue to inspire generations.
