The town was founded in 1875 on the farm Goedgevonden (meaning “Well Found”).

It was originally known as Ceres Road Station, being a railway station and stop-point on the line from Cape Town.
In 1910, it was renamed Wolseley, in honour of Sir Garnet Wolseley, a British military officer.
Wolseley lies in the upper Breede River Valley, between several mountain ranges: the Waterval Mountains, Witzenberg Mountains, and Waaihoek.
It sits on a watershed: some water from around the area flows into the Berg River basin, some into the Breede River basin.
The economy has historically been agricultural: vineyards, orchards, wheat fields, cattle and fruit farming are important. Also pack-houses, fruit canneries and related supporting industries evolved (wood crates, etc.).
A notable monument: there is a Stone Blockhouse built in ~1901 during the Anglo-Boer War by the British to guard the railway bridges and lines.
Music
"From the hills the rooftops shimmer"
From the hills the rooftops shimmer,
morning breaks, the silence parts.
Every tower holds a story,
every chime still stirs the heart.
Lifted higher, voices calling,
echoes rising through the air.
Faith and memory keep on falling,
like a song that’s always there.
Streets of stone and doors wide open,
steps have worn the pathways thin.
Generations leave their footprints,
yet the circle holds within.
Lifted higher, voices calling,
echoes rising through the air.
Time is fleeting, yet unbroken,
like a song that’s always there.
Shadows drift and light keeps turning,
seasons bend and years will fly.
Still the spirit, ever burning,
writes its story on the sky.
Lifted higher, voices calling,
echoes rising everywhere.
Through the ages, still returning,
like a song that’s always there.
