The Tavera dam was the first of its kind in the country, it is used for irrigation, electricity generation and the supply of water for the aqueducts of Santiago and Moca. After damming the waters of the Yaque del Norte river, it is the main source of water supply for agricultural production in the municipalities of Navarrete, Villa González and the towns of the Northwest line, through the two main irrigation channels, such as they are Ulises Francisco Espaillat and Monsieur Bogaert.

The study and design of the Tavera dam were started in 1966 by the German firm Lahmeyer International, which was also in charge of supervision throughout the construction process.
The construction of the work was started in 1969 by the American company Emkai, and it was inaugurated on February 27, 1973, making it the first large reservoir built in the Dominican Republic.

The Tavera dam is located in the municipality of Jánico. The waters of the Yaque del Norte river have been dammed in the town of Tavera and el Bao in Sabana Iglesia, inaugurated in 1983.
The Tavera reservoir has a capacity for 170 million cubic meters of water, these two dams have a total capacity of 417 million cubic meters of water, and communicate through an open-air channel and through a 4.70 km tunnel to the 98 megawatt Sabana Iglesia power station.

It has a retaining wall 77 meters high. It forms a lake of 150 million m3 of water and 7 kms in length, it has six drainage gates with the capacity to vent 1,000 cubic meters per second, plus an emergency dump with a capacity of seven thousand cubic meters per second.

And another service dump to drain three thousand cubic meters per second, these dumps can withstand more than ten thousand cubic meters per second of discharge. The height for the service dump to operate is 327.50 and the height for pouring emergency water is 328.90.
