Tactical Training Techniques: One-Handed Magazine Reload with Alien Gear Holsters

How do you perform a one-handed magazine reload? It isn't the hardest thing in the world to do, but there is definitely a best technique for performing one.

Alien Gear Holsters was visited by Jason Beighley of Skeleton Key Tactical, who showed us a ton of great tactical training tips. Jason is a retired Tier 1 operator from the United States Army, and one of the best training instructors you could possibly learn from.

A one-handed magazine change is best done as a form of administrative reload, which is done with your pistol in the holster, rather than in the hand or elsewhere.

As part of tactical training, you want to run this exercise as if in a combat environment. Don't take your eyes off the target while performing a one-handed reload.

When the slide locks to the rear, drop the empty magazine, and then insert the pistol into the holster. Get a fresh magazine, and perform an administrative reload by inserting the loaded magazine into the gun.

Draw the pistol, and hit the slide release, charging the pistol, and then present it to the target to start shooting.

Of course, there are some variations. Some people might prefer to eject the magazine when the pistol is holstered to retain the magazine. In a combat environment, magazine retention isn't necessarily the highest priority but might be in the competition setting, so that is something you'll have to determine for yourself and your needs.

Some people will perform a one-handed reload by squeezing the pistol between the knees. While it can work, it takes your attention off the target and thus puts you at a tactical disadvantage.
