In the early morning hours of Friday, June 13, Israel launched a series of strikes against Iran, targeting nuclear sites across the country and assassinating military leaders and nuclear scientists. In addition to that, Israel conducted covert sabotage missions on missile and air defense sites across Iran. Iran responded with drone attacks and missiles of their own, some of which impacted the Israeli cities of Tel Aviv and Haifa. Since then, both countries have been trading blows, with Israel landing some more significant strikes in and around Tehran, Iran’s capital.
But how did we get here? That’s the question I want to answer for you all today. Rather than discussing what has happened in recent weeks and what could happen in the future, I want to take a step back and examine how Israel and Iran went from a friendly relationship to fierce enemies, while also discussing the general hellscape of geopolitics that is the Middle East. Let's get into it.
