Fossil Creek is a beautiful oasis in the dry state of Arizona. We start our hike at the Bob Bear Trailhead, following a difficult route deep into Fossil Springs Wilderness to the remnants of Fossil Creek Dam, home to the best swimming hole in Arizona.
As a result of misuse of the area, camping is not allowed April-October, and to hike in this area you need a permit. Permits can be very difficult to obtain for weekend dates, so it's important to get your permits well ahead of when you want to go. You will not be allowed in if you do not possess a permit!
When exploring this area, please be considerate of the environment and other visitors. Follow the principles of Leave No Trace (found at lnt.org) to protect this magical area for generations to come. If you find trash, please take the time to pick up at least a few pieces to leave the area better than you found it, even if that garbage 'isn't yours'. This area is remote and there is no 'maid service' that comes through to pick up garbage. We must be responsible users of OUR public lands to ensure the recreational values in this area can be conserved indefinitely.
