In this video, we explore the revival of the Indo-Russian IL-276 transport aircraft project, a joint venture between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC). Once abandoned in 2016, the project is back as a contender in the Indian Air Force’s Multi-Role Transport Aircraft (MTA) program.
The IL-276 medium transport aircraft is designed to carry a 20-tonne payload, operate from short and rugged airstrips, and fill the critical gap between India’s C-130J Super Hercules and the heavy C-17 Globemaster. With its new FADEC-enabled PD-14LM engines, co-developed with India’s GTRE, the aircraft promises to meet IAF’s demand for modern avionics, efficiency, and interoperability.
The Indian Air Force is expected to release the RFP (Request for Proposal) soon, seeking 40-80 aircraft with at least 50% indigenous content. IL-276 now competes against the Airbus C-295, Lockheed Martin C-130J, and Embraer KC-390 Millennium.
Will this revived India-Russia collaboration succeed? Can IL-276 become the perfect “Goldilocks” solution for India’s transport fleet modernization? Watch the full video to find out!
