Should elephants and great apes be banned from captivity?
Canada is looking to do just that, and they are doing so under the guise of “protecting” wild animals. We already have very strict laws in place on bringing exotic animals into America and Canada that it’s nearly impossible to bring in elephants or great apes. No one is taking animals out of the wild anymore, all this legislation would do is make it more difficult for the breeding programs we have for these amazing animals. I am completely against any legislation that wants to ban animals from being in captive care. This legislation isn’t going to help wild animals at all, this legislation is only going to stop the ones in captivity from having offspring. We are losing animals in the wild at a drastic rate, wild animals have never needed our help like they do now, but we don’t help wild animals by banning the ones that were born and raised in domestic care. Our domestic exotic animals are great ambassadors for their wild cousins, they help inspire the world to want to protect them. My amazing elephant has inspired thousands of people to love, respect and want to protect elephants. Humans and animals have coexisted since the beginning of time, it is one of the most natural things we do. We are also animals on this planet, but humans have the ability to comprehend our obligations to protect other species, and that is exactly what we should do. Banning them from our lives is not the answer. Put your energy into finding solutions on how we can protect their habitats in the wild. Stop attacking the animals that are being taken care in captivity, they deserve to have offspring and a future in our lives. The only way forward is to STOP supporting extremism, and work together to find solutions.
