What you should know.

-Tonsupa is located in the Atacames canton of the Esmeraldas province, 26 kilometers southwest of the city of Esmeraldas.

-Tonsupa, Súa, Same, and Atacames are the four most important beaches in the Atacames canton of the Esmeraldas province.

-Tonsupa Beach is approximately 4 kilometers long and 60 meters wide, with an average temperature of 21 to 32 degrees Celsius, and top-notch hotel infrastructure.

-Legends of Tonsupa

Its name comes from the prince Tonsupa, a noble-hearted indigenous man eternally in love with his homeland. This area was formerly the site of the indigenous cemetery. During the various construction projects undertaken while excavating the foundations of buildings, countless ceramics with vibrant colors, finely decorated and finished figures, pots, and fragments from the Atacame culture have been found. The Atacame people were known for their kindness, friendliness, and peace. This is why, when a ship carrying enslaved Africans shipwrecked off our coast, they encountered no resistance from the indigenous people upon disembarking. This demonstrates their accustomedness to receiving visitors from different regions who made Atacame their center for trade and the exchange of goods, as they were primarily engaged in fishing, agriculture, and crafts. Even today, some mounds, which served as sacred urns for the deceased, can still be seen.
