Jang Seung-hyo is an artist who doesn′t limit himself to a single field of art and uses diverse media to express himself artistically. He first displayed his talent, creating installation artworks under the theme of robots, and later presented artworks created by combining fragments of images and photographs.
Robots, which were one of his childhood interests, became the main theme of his graduation project and his works in the beginning of his career. He quickly gained fame and recognition in the field of environmental art for building massive steel structures depicting robots. Then, in his mid-30s, he decided that he needed change, and he left Korea in an attempt to discover a new medium for his artistic expressions. Soon afterwards, the tens of thousands of pictures he took in New York became a source of inspiration and he pieced the fragments of the pictures together into brilliant works of art.
Now, Jang Seung-hyo receives inspiration in his studio, designed based on his philosophy on art and life. The countless images and photographs found in his colorful studio are used to bring forth new works of art. The fascinating artist has set a new goal for himself and it′s to create artworks by combining different disciplines in the field of arts. For this, he has collaborated with one of the most famous fashion designers in Korea, Lie Sang-bong, and left a strong impression with his designs shown at the 2015 Seoul Fashion Week.

′이미지 조각으로 예술을 빚어낸′ 아티스트 장승효
자신의 기억을 모아 콜라주로 탄생시킨 아티스트! 패션과 음악, 미술 등 다양한 장르의 경계를 넘나드는 예술인! 금속을 이용한 로봇설치물을 시작으로 사진과 조각을 결합한 작품에 이르기까지, 소재와 형태를 변화시킨 작품들을 끊임없이 선보이는 장승효 작가.
그는 직접 촬영하거나 서치하면서 찾아낸 사진들에서 오려낸 이미지들을 조각 위에 붙여 새로운 오브제를 만들어낸다. 그리고 그 오브제는 재료가 담고 있던 스토리와는 전혀 다른 새로운 이야기로 재탄생된다. 화려한 색깔과 디자인을 좋아하는 그는 작업실과 개인 공간 모두 자신의 철학과 사상을 담으려 노력했다. 작품을 완성하는 수많은 사진 조각들, 그가 직접 카메라에 담은 기억들은 곧 그의 작품이 되어 아직도 간직되고 있다. 얼마 전 ‘이상봉 디자이너’와 콜라보레이션해 화제를 모았던 [2015 S/S 서울패션위크]에서도, 단숨에 눈길을 사로잡을 정도로 인팩트 있는 작품을 선보여 큰 이슈를 모았다.
반면 어릴 적부터 로봇을 동경해왔던 그는 대학 졸업 작품으로 로봇을 만들게 되면서 환경조각에서 명성을 쌓고 입지를 구축하게 된다. 거대한 철제조각을 기중기로 쌓아올려서 초대형 로봇을 빚던 그가 홀연히 한국을 떠나게 된 때는 무려 삼십대 중반. 낯선 땅에서 그는 이전의 대형 철조각을 모두 버리고, 사진 작품을 물감으로 사용하였다. 뉴욕의 모습을 촬영한 몇 만장의 사진들이 그의 눈앞에서 작품을 위한 오브제로 변신한 것이다. 그렇게 십여 년의 시간이 지나고 장승효 작가의 또 다른 목표가 생겼다는데. 두 가지 컬러가 섞여 새로운 컬러를 창조해내듯 여러 분야를 하나의 작품에 녹여내는데 열중하고 있다는 그의 일상 이야기와 카메라 안에 담긴 인생스토리. 그리고 그의 주거공간에서 본 작품 세계까지 ‘The Innerview’에서만 확인할 수 있다.
