In the key of C major, instead of going straight from Dm7 to G7, try this:

Dm7 → Fm/Ab → G7 → C

Here’s what’s happening:
    •    Fm is a minor chord a whole step below G (the V chord)
    •    Played in 1st inversion (Ab in the bass), it creates smooth chromatic voice leading from Ab to G
    •    It adds a jazzy, soulful tension without sounding harsh
    •    And harmonically, it borrows the iv chord from C minor (modal interchange)

This little trick can take your chord progressions to the next level — especially in jazz, gospel, and neo-soul styles.
