Arabic Grammar (النحو والصرف) is the system of rules that explains how Arabic words are formed, how sentences are structured, and how meanings are conveyed. It is traditionally divided into two major fields:
1. النَّحْو (Syntax)
Deals with how words function within a sentence—their positions, endings, and relationships.
Key topics include:
الإعراب (Case endings): How the endings of nouns and verbs change depending on their role (subject, object, etc.).
الجملة الاسمية والفعلية: The two main sentence types in Arabic (nominal and verbal).
الفاعل والمفعول به: Subject and object.
المبتدأ والخبر: Components of a nominal sentence.
النواسخ: Particles and verbs that "transform" sentences (كان وأخواتها، إن وأخواتها).
2. الصَّرْف (Morphology)
Focuses on how words are formed and how their meanings change based on patterns.
Key topics include:
الجذر والوزن: Most Arabic words come from triliteral roots (like كتب) fitted into patterns (وزن) to create meaning.
صيغ المبالغة، مصادر، أسماء الزمان والمكان، اسم الآلة…
تصريف الأفعال: Conjugation of verbs (past, present, imperative).
الضمائر، جمع التكسير، المثنى: How to form plurals, duals, etc.
3. Why Arabic Grammar Matters
Arabic is a highly inflected language, meaning small changes in word endings or patterns can change meaning significantly. Grammar helps:
Understand the Qur’an and classical texts.
Speak and write correctly.
Avoid ambiguity.
4. The Goal of Arabic Grammar
Classically stated as:
"صون اللسان عن الخطأ في كلام العرب"
To protect the tongue from errors in the speech of Arabs.
