In 1988 the HSV VL SS Group A ‘Walkinshaw’ was born, its purpose; homologate the Holden VL Commodore Group A race car. In 1987 the then famous Holden Dealer Team disbanded leaving a hole in the industry, however, Holden had plans and made the Walkinshaw, now an icon of Australian Motorsport it's first car to roll out of Tom Walkinshaw Racing and his newly formed Holden Special Vehicles operation in Melbourne.

With a mere 500 vehicles commissioned Holden had to commission another 250 to make 750 in total just to satisfy the public demand.
