https://www.federalcontractingcenter.... | If you’re like most federal contractors, you’ve been taught to pursue federal contracts in a certain way. Typically, that process goes something like this:
First, register in SAM.gov to get your CAGE Code. While you’re registering in SAM, make sure you research and pick the right NAICS Codes. Investigate and sign up for any small business certifications you are eligible for. Once that’s all done, start searching for contracts to bid on at SAM.gov. And finally, if that’s not working out – look into getting a GSA Schedule Contract.
Sound familiar? If so, it’s because this is the standard path followed by most small business federal contractors, and in our experience it typically leads to frustration, lack of results, and eventually the business just gives up on federal contracting altogether. At Federal Contracting Center, we refer to this as the Reactive Approach to federal contracting.
Why do we call it “reactive”?
Because in this model, you have to wait for opportunities, then react. You wait for a government buyer to find your SBA profile, then reach out to you. You wait for a contract to be posted at SAM.gov for bid, then compete against everyone else for it.
As a result, you face the most competition, have the lowest odds of winning, and eventually get frustrated to the point of giving up.
Alternatively, you can use the same approach winning contractors are using – the proactive approach. With the proactive approach, you target your best potential customers in the government, you create a plan to engage them effectively, and you proactively reach out to establish lines of communication, trust, and eventually build relationships that lead awards that aren’t published, announced or competed – just like other winning contractors are doing.
If you’re ready to try the same proactive approach other small businesses are leveraging to win millions in federal contracts, give Federal Contracting Center a call.
