Caution Dangerous Stunt. A teen daredevil sets out to break world record for fire breathing. Here’s the exclusive story. Patrick Bachman is 19 years old and drives a truck in Brainerd Minnesota. But he wants to be like the Human Torch and go “flame on!” Pat wants to be in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest ball of flames. He’s a fire breather and spits flammable liquid out of his mouth and sets it on fire. He learned the secret from an old magician who taught him how to play with fire … literally. Please, don’t even think of trying this. As you will see it’s very, extreme dangerous stunt.
What is called “fire performance” dates back as early as 10AD to 70AD. It’s a combination of fire dance, fire eating and fire breathing. In the U.S. there seemed to be a fire breather at ever carnival. Pat Buchman was attracted to the flames and the spectacle. “How many fire breathers to do know?”
THE REST OF THE STORY – We met Patrick on July 19, 1979 and he got singed. On July 29, he made his attempt at the world’s record at a local radio station in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The existing record for the largest flame was 23 feet. In practice Pat blew a 20-foot flame. For his official attempt he spat out a massive 22-foot blaze … and set his face on fire. He was rushed to the emergency room for treatment. At the time he proclaimed that he would make another attempt in a few weeks. A few minutes later his sister came out and announced that Patrick Bachman had officially retired from fire breathing. I guess that was the end to Pat’s Flaming Youth. This story aired on WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News in 1979.
