Our two day adventure takes us from Baker Nevada , population 6, to the Shoshone Ice Caves Idaho.
The first part of our journey takes us along route 50, the loneliest road in America to Ely Nv and then inwards through the Great Salt Lake Desert to Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.
Bonneville Flats is the remnant of the large ancient Lake Bonneville which existed around 20,000 to 13,000 years ago.
The salt flats are densely packed salt pan about 12 miles long and 5 miles wide covering over 46 square miles.
Near the center of the salt pan the crust is almost 5 feet thick, tapering to one inch at the edges.
It's estimated to hold 147 million-tons of salts, of which 90% is Sodium Chloride.
Angel Lake, a stunning glacial tarn is situated in the Ruby Mountains of Northern Nevada at 8,378 feet elevation. The Ruby Mountain are named for the garnet gem stones found in the mountains by early explorers.
Shoshone Ice Caves
Experience the shock of stepping from the surface of a lava field at 90 degrees Fahrenheit into a cave at an icy 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Shoshone ice Caves were formed around 24 million years ago when volcanic eruptions created lava fields and lava tubes.
The caves have a natural refrigeration system which keeps the temperature within the cave below freezing point, all year round.
The ice in the cave stretches for around 1,000 feet in length and varies in depth from 8 to 30 feet.
