Over the past two years, the Black Five has proven elusive due to maintenance, failures and the reintroduction of renovated locos into traffic, and this - the 2017 Spring Gala - was the first time I've ridden behind it; something I'm sure to repeat now I've done it once.
Enjoy this high-quality sound recording of the famous class, undeniably one of Stanier's most brutal-sounding designs, working hard up the steep gradients of the Mid-Hants Railway.
