Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies is a voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) program that empowers the shipping industry to help safeguard endangered whales, reduce ocean noise, and cut harmful emissions. By slowing down to 10 knots or less in NOAA-designated zones during the VSR season, participating vessels significantly lower the risk of whale strikes, improve regional air quality, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
This film highlights the science, people, and purpose behind BWBS—featuring verified data, industry leaders, and real-time action on the water. BWBS measures environmental impact and compliance and celebrates those making a difference for marine life, coastal communities, and our shared planet.
