A Variable Density TBM is a first in the world, jointly designed by both MMC-Gamuda and Herrenknecht AG, a leading manufacturer of TBMs worldwide. Herrenknecht were the suppliers of the slurry TBMs used in the SMART tunnel project, and therefore has a greater understanding of the complexities of the Kuala Lumpur Karst.
The Variable Density TBM has been specially designed by these two tunnelling experts (MMC-Gamuda and Herrenknecht AG) for the MRT underground route with the express purpose of meeting the challenges of Kuala Lumpur's extreme karst environment. Using this adapted machine will minimise the risk of sinkholes or blowouts from occurring during the construction process.
