Raj Reddy is the University Professor of Computer Science and Robotics and Moza Bint Nasser Chair at the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. Raj has been a visionary pioneer of artificial intelligence for more than 50 years. In 1994 he and Ed Feigenbaum received the Turing Award "for pioneering the design and construction of large scale artificial intelligence systems, demonstrating the practical importance and potential commercial impact of artificial intelligence technology." In addition to being a Turing Laureate, Raj is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, a Fellow of the Computer History Museum, and the recipient of many honorary degrees. Raj was the founding director of the CMU Robotics Institute and the Dean of CMU’s School of Computer Science. As a dean of SCS, he helped create the Language Technologies Institute, the Human Computer Interaction Institute, the Center for Automated Learning and Discovery (since renamed as the Machine Learning Department), and the Institute for Software Research. He was instrumental in Paul Allen’s decision to launch AI2.
Andries van Dam
Andy van Dam is in his 60th year as a professor at Brown University, where he is the Thomas J. Watson, Jr. University Professor of Technology and Education and Professor of Computer Science. Andy is a pioneer in computer graphics, hypermedia systems, post-WIMP user interfaces, and educational software. He has been working for more than four decades on systems for creating and reading electronic books with interactive illustrations for use in teaching and research. In addition to receiving a large number of awards for his work in information display, computer graphics, and education, Andy – like Raj – is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, a Fellow of the Computer History Museum, and the recipient of many honorary degrees. Andy co-founded ACM SIGGRAPH, co-founded and served as the first chair of Brown’s Computer Science Department, and was a Principal Investigator and Director of the NSF Science and Technology Center for Graphics and Visualization.
