Beneath the clouds of political turmoil, the Kashmir brims with stories about the crafts that have been practiced for hundreds of years. One of those is Sozni weaving, a form of embroidery that uses thin needles on wool to create intricate, elaborate clothing embroidered with floral patterns. Bashir Ahmad is one such award-winning craftsman who lives in a far-off village in Beerwah tehsil of central Kashmir’s Budgam district. He has been weaving intricate patterns for the past four decades.
