We all want some unifying, unchanging, universal, absolute truth that unites all things, all truths. We seek that theory of everything, especially in a universe that often seems cold and chaotic. To contemplate existing within oneself apart from everything else is the greatest of all anguish. I feel this anguish on a constant occasion.
What if I were to tell you that there is a universal and absolute truth? There is a doctrine that is so profound it explains everything. In doing so, I must tell you why I call myself an Existentialist. The father of modern existentialism was Jean-Paul Sartre; he once looked at a waiter and wondered if he was a waiter or just pretending to be one.B For Sartre, to live inauthentically is to live in “Bad Faith.” Aristotle wrote in accordance: "being as such may be in several ways: one is to be accidental, another to be true; non-being is to be false."C To live inauthentically is to be false, non-being. For Sartre, a being is characterized as one who can choose for oneself. One who denies freewill shall say that one was born this way, but that is a lie. That person is living in bad faith and is not a being but a puppet with memories. To live inauthentically is to live in a way that is contrary to your nature. But what is our nature?
