Week 34 of a series I'm calling "52 Licks." 1 new jazz phrase each week.
I wanted to hit some more Philly Joe this week, and ran across a "jazz rudiment" (i.e. a rudiment that works well in jazz) that he loves. He uses it in several ways and I try to show you some of them.
Here's a Philly Joe solo on Hank Mobley's "Workout" where he uses bits and pieces of it a lot. Check out around 8:50 where he starts to use it in longer stretches.
