The Grand Canyon in Arizona is a 277-mile long, mile-deep gorge carved by the Colorado River. Surrounded by national parks, forests, and tribal lands, it was strongly championed for protection by President Theodore Roosevelt.
Its rock layers reveal nearly two billion years of Earth’s history, exposed as the Colorado River cut through the rising Colorado Plateau over the past 5–6 million years. The region has been home to Native Americans for thousands of years, including the Pueblo people, who considered it sacred. The first known European to see the canyon was Spanish explorer García López de Cárdenas in 1540.
