Colostrum is the very first stage of breast milk. It begins forming during pregnancy and lasts for the first few days after birth. This special milk is usually yellow or cream-colored and much thicker than mature milk.
Colostrum is extremely rich in proteins, fat-soluble vitamins, minerals, and especially immunoglobulins. These immunoglobulins are antibodies passed from mother to baby, providing passive immunity and helping protect newborns against many types of bacterial and viral infections.
Thanks to its powerful immune-boosting properties, colostrum is often called the baby’s “first vaccine”.
After about 2–4 days postpartum, colostrum gradually transitions into transitional milk, which then develops into mature breast milk as the baby grows.
Understanding the importance of colostrum helps parents realize why early breastfeeding plays such a critical role in a newborn’s health and immune protection.
