The Western Powers could increase their influence in China during the 19th century. Resistance came from the Boxer Movement, a secret and spiritual society. After attacks on westerners and Christians intensified the Eight-Nations Alliance, consisting of Germany, Austria-Hungary, France, Britain, Italy, Russia, the U.S. and Japan, managed to suppress the Boxer Rebellion. All the major powers stood together for a last time, 15 years before the Great War.
