This is Ocean from the Velvet Underground's live 1969 album (which is also available on the Complete Matrix Tapes collection), and I think you can hear why I love it so much. At about four minutes the "waves" begin crashing in, and the band rides them past the ten minute mark:
• Ocean (Live)
Here are the New York Dolls absolutely killing it at the Little Hippodrome club with Pirate Love, Johnny's solo joint. Jerry's drums and Sylvain's electric piano provide the sugar, and Johnny's gritty vocals provide the salt:
• New York Dolls - Pirate Love
Here is Patti Smith Group with Frederick (and you'll notice in the episode, I couldn't help but pronounce every syllable of Fred-e-rick, the same way Patti does in the song). My favorite track on the Wave LP, produced by Todd Rundgren, it's possibly the prettiest song Patti ever did:
• Frederick
This is the underrated Rifle Range from Blondie's debut LP. Debbie's vocals are sugary sweet, as are the backing vocals, and there's even a little Hawaii-Five-O-style surf guitar:
• Rifle Range (Remastered 2001)
For this next track, It's Too Late by the Jim Carroll Band, I couldn't resist linking to this mimed version from the movie Tuff Turf. It's fascinating viewing, from seeing Jim smiling and mock-playing guitar to a shirtless (yet bowtie'd) Robert Downey Jr on drums. You're welcome!:
• It's Too Late - The Jim Carroll Band
Here is Ain't That Nothin' by Television from their Adventure album. At about the 3:20 mark, Richard Lloyd launches into one of his best ever solos--and Tom Verlaine begins singing over it! Haha, now that's good Television!:
• Ain't That Nothin' (2003 Remaster)
This is the slow-burn epic Love Cry off of Alan Vega's solo LP:
• Alan Vega - Alan Vega - A4 - Love Cry
Here is Bonzo Goes to Bitburg, just one of the gems off Ramones Mania:
• Ramones - Bonzo Goes To Bitburg (Offi...
Here is ESG's iconic classic, U.F.O., which you might have heard somewhere before:
• U.F.O
This is the Liars with Mr Your (Sic) On Fire Mister from their killer debut LP. They would quickly abandon this somewhat accessible sound to follow a far more experimental muse, but I have always loved this album's funky street-smart aesthetic:
• liars mr. you're on fire
Here is Miles Away by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs from their stunning debut LP. It's hard to explain just how exciting and refreshing this band was at the time--but this track gives you an idea:
• Miles Away
Here is Richard Hell and the Voidoids with Down at the Rock and Roll Club, one of the most fun tracks any NYC band would ever release. Richard really captures a wild night on the town, and takes us along for the ride. Grab a SCOTCH AND SODA at the 35 second mark:
• Down at the Rock and Roll Club (2017 ...
This is the Richard Hell-era Heartbreakers kicking off their set at Mother's with Love Comes In Spurts, but not before Richard antagonizes the Beatles-loving audience by saying, "The Beatles suck!" You can hear an audible gasp before the band launches into a powerful rendition of Love Comes In Spurts. Richard had some musical muscle behind him with Johnny, Jerry and Walter:
• The heartbreakers live at Mothers - ...
Lou Reed's Take No Prisoners is a fascinating live document. At around the 30 second mark, amid squealing microphone feedback, Lou states, "That's how Metal Machine was born by the way...." Lou then launches into a transcendent version of Street Hassle:
• Street Hassle (Live at the Bottom Lin...
