Deeghawapi (දිඝාවාපි) is one of the most sacred and ancient Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka, located in the Ampara District. Its origins go back to the 3rd century BCE, during the great hydraulic civilization of ancient Sri Lanka. According to the Mahavamsa and Dipavamsa, Lord Buddha himself is believed to have visited this site, where later a cetiya (stupa) was built in his honour.
The region known as Dighamandala (දිඝාමඩුල්ල) was ruled by Prince Saddhatissa, brother of King Dutugemunu, and played a key role in the history of the Ruhuna Kingdom. Archaeological excavations in Deeghawapi have revealed ancient inscriptions, gold leaf relics, and strong evidence of royal patronage from kings such as Kannittha Tissa (164–192 CE).
Today, Deeghawapi stands as a timeless symbol of devotion, heritage, and Sri Lanka’s proud Buddhist identity — linking legend, history, and archaeology in one sacred landscape.
