Multiplicity in the 1H NMR spectrum... TENDS to behave itself nicely...
... for non-chiral, non-double bonded things... without too many...
You know what? It's amazing this works as well as it does, frankly. But for an astonishingly large subset of compounds, you can predict how many neighbors a signal has... by the M+1 rule.
Timestamps:
0:00 - intro and peaks/signals
1:15 - the molecule we're going to play with
1:49 - these peaks look complicated!
2:20 - which spin systems do we have?
2:39 - what's close enough to be a neighbor, usually?
4:18 - a doublet
6:28 - a triplet, a quartet, a septet
7:47 - Pascal's triangle and M+1 rule
