The 422nd meeting of the NY Comics & Picture-story Symposium held on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 at 3 pm EDT.
Olivier Schrauwen on his recent book, "Sunday."
SUNDAY presents a day in the life of Thibault Schrauwen, a graphic designer, who on the verge of his 36th birthday spends a day alone at home in the Belgian city of Ghent.
His meandering thoughts, guide the reader throughout the book, initially commenting on whatever’s in his direct environment and then, as the story’s scope widens, contrasting with the realties of the world outside of his row house.
The book elaborates on the idea of a ‘Sunday’, the last day of the week, a day of rest, a the day of communion, or in Thibault’s case a day of relentless procrastination and modest insights.
As a whole SUNDAY attempts in its collage-like narrative construction to offer a kaleidoscopic experience — how one person’s interior reality relates to the entirety of the universe.
Olivier Schrauwen (1977) is the author of Arsene Schrauwen, Parallel Lives and other books.
He lives and works in Berlin
During his talk he will elaborate on the making of his latest book SUNDAY (Fantagraphics, 2024)
