Snapper Rocks is a world-famous surf spot located on the southern Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia, near the border with New South Wales. It's part of the Rainbow Bay area in Coolangatta and is known for producing some of the most perfect right-hand point breaks in the world.
Key Highlights of Snapper Rocks:
🌊 Surfing Mecca
Type of wave: Right-hand point break
Best swell direction: East to southeast
Ideal wind: Westerly or light offshore
Wave quality: When conditions align, it creates a long, barreling ride that can connect all the way through to Kirra, forming a "Superbank" wave over a kilometer long.
Skill level: Advanced – the waves can be fast, powerful, and crowded.
🏄♂️ Superbank
The Superbank is a man-made surf break that formed after sand was pumped to manage erosion along the coast. This enhanced the natural point break at Snapper Rocks and extended the ride through Rainbow Bay, Greenmount, and Kirra.
The Superbank is considered one of the longest and most consistent rides in the world when it's firing.
🏆 Competitions
Snapper Rocks was traditionally the season opener for the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour. Events like the Quiksilver Pro and Roxy Pro have drawn elite surfers and massive crowds.
📍 Location
Coolangatta, Gold Coast, Queensland
Near the border with New South Wales, making it accessible from both states.
The area has a relaxed beach town vibe but gets bustling when the surf is good.
🐚 Beyond Surfing
Snapper Rocks is part of the Gold Coast World Surfing Reserve.
Great for scenic views, rock pools, and beach walks even if you're not surfing.
It’s a popular spot for photographers, especially at sunrise or when the waves are pumping.
