Life care planning is a process for systematically identifying and quantifying services needed to maximize function and quality of life, while proactively minimizing complications and costs, for people with significant disabilities. The knowledge and expertise of Rehabilitation Counselors is a great base upon which to develop a specialty practice in this area. An overview of the life care planning process will be provided, and benefits of having a life care planning document serve as a “roadmap” to services needed over time will be discussed, from the perspectives of people with disabilities and their families, hiring parties (attorneys, special needs trust administrators, rehabilitation hospitals, etc.), and professionals providing life care planning services.
Presented by Christine (Chris) Reid, Ph.D., CRC, CLCP is a Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Counseling at Virginia Commonwealth University. She has over 35 years of experience as a Rehabilitation Counseling educator, researcher, and service provider; her private practice focuses on life care planning, vocational analysis, and research consultation.
