Powdery Mildew is one plant fungal disease which never fails to shock home gardeners. You see, the sudden emergence of white powdery spots on plant's leaves, stems, and fruit. Which otherwise were healthy a day before.

At, start off white spots appear on the underside of the leaves that quickly covers topside of leaves in a few hours' time only. As the disease advances, the spot gets bigger and plant leaves, stem and new growth get covered by a white or gray powdery film.

In your home garden, vine plants like zucchini, cucumber, squash, zucchini, cucumber, squash, grapes, and melon and other one like tomato, pepper can get powdery mildew disease.

Flowering plants like zinnias, roses, dahlias, chrysanthemum, and sunflowers too can get infected.

Powdery Mildew disease is caused by fungi spores when climate is warm and dry. Fungi spores are microscopic meaning they can’t be seen by naked eyes. These can be compared with plant seeds. They too remain dormant till they get ideal condition to germinate. Once germinated they multiply quickly. Few species of fungal spores born in as little time as 48 hours. Once born they travel to other plants and soil via wind, insects, and splashing water.

Though Powdery mildew grows on leaf surface it takes it nutrients from leaf. The nutrients which otherwise would have fueled plant growth get sucked by it. Leaf covered by it cannot carry out photosynthesis resulting in less formation of plant food.

If disease remains untreated, a severe infection results in yellowing of leaves and distortion of leaves, flower, fruit and buds.

In advance stage of disease, you will see leaf wilt, branch dieback, premature leaf drop, blemishes on fruit, and buds that won’t open.

Yield and quality of flowers and fruits get reduced.

Powdery Mildew treatment
