During the late 1970s and early 1980s, disco left a lasting imprint on jazz, shaping the evolution of jazz-funk, fusion, and smooth jazz. The steady four-on-the-floor beat, groove-heavy basslines, and polished production drew jazz musicians toward the dancefloor. Record labels embraced this shift, pushing out disco-jazz hits that found their way into clubs and radio stations alike. Jazz clubs adapted to the groove, while DJs integrated these infectious rhythms into their sets—helping bridge the gap between jazz, electronic music, and even early hip-hop.
A dedicated vinyl collector, occasional DJ, and relentless dust shop digger, DiggerDan is on a mission to unearth hidden musical gems. As part of the Dig a Little syndicate, an East London independent record fair, he brings together fellow diggers to celebrate the art of deep digging. His DAL Mixcloud show is a space where he shares his latest finds, weaving together eclectic sets spanning soul, funk, jazz, AOR, and global grooves, alongside stories from the crate-digging world.
For this mix, DiggerDan selects 12 tracks from jazz artists who embraced the disco rhythm, blending deep grooves with impeccable musicianship. Expect lesser-known gems from Corky McClerkin, Ed Kelly, and Moses Davis, alongside established legends like Lonnie Liston Smith, Gary Bartz, and Richard Evans. The common thread? A deep, undeniable disco groove.
