Kanneliya is a unique ecosystem located in the Galle District of Sri Lanka. It is considered one of the biodiversity hotspots in the region. This reserve belongs to the Kanneliya-Dediyagala-Nakiyadeniya forest complex. This entire forest complex covers an area of nearly sq. km. 101.4. It was designated a Biosphere Reserve in 2004 by UNESCO.

The Kanneliya Reserve is one part of it.

Udugama is the nearest major city to the Kanneliya Conservation Center and is connected by high-quality access roads. The Kanneliya Conservation Center is managed by the Forest Department. It contains lecture halls, a restaurant, accommodation, and plant nurseries. Also, there are various educational programs conducted by the Forest Conservation Officers.

There are a number of forest trails starting from this conservation center. Among them, the Kabbalé forest trail has a special place. It is popular for its ruggedness and scenic beauty. Here it is important to be prepared for the attack of leeches. The total length of the Kabbalé trail is about 12 km. and to travel there, it is mandatory to get the guidance of a Forest Guide.

Among the special places to be found on this forest trail, are the waterfall, the Small Kabbalé viewing point, and the peak of the Greater Kabbalé hill. This waterfall dries up completely during the dry season.
