The 4,000 years old sacred burial mounds of Clava Bulnuaran, better known as Clava Cairns, are located near Culloden in beautiful wooded surroundings.
There are three incredibly well preserved prehistoric cairns that were built to house the dead and are said to give many clues to the beliefs of Bronze age society. Each cairn has a central chamber, the outer two cairns have entrance passages but the central ring cairn is fully enclosed and all of them are surrounded by a stone circle.
The three prominent cairns are positioned in a line running north-east to south-west. The passages of the two cairns are also aligned towards the south-west suggesting links to the midwinter sunset. The standing stones are graded in height with the tallest facing the setting sun in the south-west which also suggests a focus on the midwinter sunset.
