Aten, Aton, Iten. These are the names of one deity, who before the controversial reign of Akhenaten (Akhenaton), was merely one of many solar symbols, was simply a solar disk, which referred to the power and omnipresence of the sun orbiting the sky. However, in the 14th century BC, Amenhotep IV (better known as Akhenaten), son of the powerful pharaoh Amenhotep III, elevated Aten to the forefront of the gods, and eventually made him the sole god, creating an entire new solar theology.

Why did Akhenaten choose this rather insignificant deity to create the first Egyptian monotheism? What influence did his predecessors have on Amenhotep IV's new religion of light? What is Atenism really about? And what does Atenism have in common with the Bible (Psalm 104)?
