This oral history interview with Jo Ann Lekawitch Beatty, is all about the pure joy of pursuing and accomplishing something very special and unique. As a teenager, just seventeen in 1961, Jo Ann knew that one day she was going to parachute out of a plane over DeLand Airport near her home. With permission from her mom, hard work and intense training by local skydivers, including Dr. John Gaffney who founded the Falling Angels Skydiving Club in 1959, Jo Ann became the first female to skydive in DeLand and the youngest woman skydiver in America! As a member of the Falling Angels and frequent jumper at the “skydiving capital of the world”, Jo Ann became an inspiration for other women, and men, to pursue their passion whatever it may be, and enjoy the thrill of their accomplishments!
