The Hawthorne effect refers to a phenomenon where individuals modify an aspect of their behavior in response to their awareness of being observed. It originated from a series of studies conducted at the Hawthorne Works factory of Western Electric near Chicago in the 1920s and 1930s. Researchers initially aimed to investigate the relationship between working conditions, such as lighting levels, and worker productivity.Surprisingly, productivity tended to increase not only when conditions were improved but also when they were worsened. This led researchers to conclude that the act of observation itself, and the feeling of being paid attention to, was a significant factor in boosting performance. The workers seemed to be responding to the increased interest and recognition they were receiving.While the original interpretations of the Hawthorne studies have been debated and refined over time, the Hawthorne effect remains a key concept in psychology, sociology, and business management. It highlights the importance of the social and psychological factors in the workplace and the potential impact of observation and attention on behavior.
