Eric was never cruel. He opened jars, kissed me on the forehead, paid bills on time. We were that couple. The grocery list on the fridge, Sunday laundry folded into neat little squares. It wasn’t passion; it was… routine. Some people would call that love settling in. I called it sleepwalking.

He started working late. Not once in a while—every night. At first, it was just “end-of-quarter chaos” or “client delays.” But the explanations grew thinner. Then came the call.

It was Donna, Eric’s mother. I was in the middle of folding towels when my phone buzzed with her name. Her voice was flat, like she’d practiced detachment.

“There’s been an accident,” she said. “James was hit by a car. A drunk driver. He’s alive, but—he won’t walk again. They say he’s lost use of both legs and his left arm.”

I dropped the towel.

James—my father-in-law—was one of the few people in Eric’s family who treated me like a person, not an accessory. He taught me how to grill steak without burning it and how to back a trailer into a driveway. The idea of him confined to a chair felt unreal.

Two days later, Donna called again. This time, her tone was rehearsed cheer.
