In this video, I want to discuss 3 popular testosterone-boosting supplements that are in many major supplement stacks but should be used with caution. While I'm not against using these supplements, it's important to be aware of some serious caution points that most people don't realize.
First up is Ashwagandha. This favorite is in a lot of testosterone supplement stacks, and for good reason. Studies suggest it can help increase testosterone naturally. For instance, a 2015 study showed that men who took 300mg of Ashwagandha root extract twice daily saw a 15% increase in testosterone over 8 weeks, compared to 2% in the placebo group. Ashwagandha works by reducing cortisol, a stress hormone, and possibly increasing Luteinizing Hormone, which is crucial for testosterone production. However, most studies don't go beyond 8 weeks, and long-term use without cycling off can lead to diminishing returns or negative side effects like lack of energy or even erectile dysfunction. I recommend using Ashwagandha only during super stressful days, and if taken regularly, cycling off for one week every four weeks.
Next, let's talk about Zinc. It's often the first supplement mentioned for natural testosterone optimization because studies link zinc deficiency to low testosterone. Men with low zinc who supplement it usually see an increase in testosterone. However, long-term zinc supplementation can lead to copper depletion in the body, causing fatigue, food sensitivities, and iron dysregulation. It's crucial to test your zinc and copper levels regularly. If you take zinc regularly, balance it by taking 2mg of copper for every 15-20mg of zinc, and avoid exceeding this dosage to prevent mineral imbalances.
Lastly, we have Fenugreek, a popular herb for boosting testosterone and enhancing libido. Fenugreek inhibits the enzyme 5-Alpha-Reductase, which converts testosterone to DHT. While DHT is important for muscle mass, strength, and sexual functions, reducing it can cause hormonal imbalances. For some, reducing high DHT levels might be beneficial, but for many, it could lead to the opposite of the desired effects. Knowing your numbers and using caution if Fenugreek is in your supplement stack is essential.
