~After this home caught fire, the neighborhood has been anticipating the day this house is finally demolished and hauled away. Bought by a woman with a history of hoarding this beautiful home didn't stand a chance. Her elderly parents, her brother with his daughter/spouse/children, her three sons and daughter with their spouses and children all had this place packed to the gills with junk. This home was difficult to heat and very costly. They used the fire place allot. It's been said that one of the propane torches that they used to light the fire had been too close to the heat and went off flying into a pile of clutter. The eldest son took the torch and threw it outside. But the clutter had already caught fire. It's said that there was little space in this home with trails which to walk through. The matriarch sent the grandchildren next door to tell their aunt that the house was on fire. The aunt ran into the house and went upstairs to tell the other's and they barely made it out in time. A dog and two cats did not make it. Their clothes, their keys, money, everything was gone. They couldn't even drive their cars after the fire. The fire departments that showed up had to treat this house differently because of the hoard. The boxes of things were stacked to the ceiling in that beautiful front porch. Fire fighters spent a lot of time seeking out hot spots and had to use poles to roll the junk over.
The family stayed in the neighborhood in their family's home next door for six months before leaving. Church and neighbors helped them out. They did not have insurance. I don't blame them for not wanting to leave. They stayed till the grandchildren were out of school.
This family has cost the community a lot of grief and made our neighborhood very unhealthy costing us a lot of money as well.
This family returned regularly to claim more of their property and dump trash. Even during the demolition you can see one of the hoarders return and pass by regularly in their truck struggling to let go. It's really sad. They have a new home now and are doing well despite the hoarding of their new neighborhood.
