In this episode of Discovering Villages of Kent, I’m wandering through the history-rich lanes of Shepherdswell, once known as Sibertswold. Nestled in the Kent Downs, this village has seen everything from medieval pilgrims to puffing steam trains.
I begin at the heart of the village before capturing the striking West Court Farmhouse, once home to monks from nearby St Radegund’s Abbey. Though now a private ruin, the abbey’s spirit still echoes through the countryside.
A real treat in this video is a quiet moment inside St Andrew’s Church, a place that has stood for centuries, welcoming pilgrims, locals, and now, curious wanderers like me.
There’s a nod to Francis Frith, whose photographs helped preserve Shepherdswell’s heritage, and I round off the journey at the East Kent Heritage Railway — where the legacy of Colonel Holman F. Stephens rolls on through steam and steel.
Join me as I take photos, share stories, and explore yet another village steeped in charm, mystery, and the occasional puff of steam.
