Despite much research into colic and the causes, it is still not clear why it occurs in babies. Theories suggest it may be related to immaturity of the bowel, food allergies, sensitivity to gas.
What is Colic?
Colic is frequent, prolonged and intense crying or fussiness in a perfectly healthy baby who is thriving has regular and unexplained crying during the first three months of life that lasts for more than 3hrs a day, more than 3 days a week.
Colic can be particularly frustrating for parents because the baby's distress occurs for no apparent reason and no amount of consoling seems to bring any relief. These episodes often occur in the evening, when parents themselves are often tired.
It can appear from around two weeks, peaks between 6-8 weeks and typically disappears around the 12-16 week mark.
