The famous war heroine of the American Revolution has come in question in recent years. Who was Molly Pitcher? Where was she from? Many history books are sure of her identity, but many historians are not so convinced. Join me as I explore the two most likely candidates, who, ironically, both have connections to the South-Central Pennsylvania area. From the Indian wars, to the streets of Carlisle, to the battles for New York City, to the fields of Monmouth, to the walls of America’s most famous military academy at West Point, follow the story of Mary Ludwig Hays and Margaret Corbin as they challenge our thinking of the rolls of women in 18th century America. Let’s trudge into battle for American Independence and ask, “will the real Molly Pitcher, please stand up?”
