With General Electric set to supply 20 F404 engines annually from FY2026-27 onwards and an additional five engines before the end of March 2026, India's export push for the Tejas Mk1A fighter jet is poised for a major revival. According to idrw.org sources, the stabilisation of engine supplies will remove the biggest bottleneck that had slowed both domestic induction and international marketing of the aircraft.
The Tejas Mk1A export campaign had never been shelved, but it was effectively pushed into the background due to two parallel challenges - delays in engine deliveries from GE and the resulting two-year delay in the delivery of 83 Tejas Mk1A jets ordered by the Indian Air Force in 2021. With these constraints now easing, HAL and the Ministry of Defence are preparing to re-energise overseas sales efforts.
